About the Firm
We are a respected and growing legal practice based in Stoke-on-Trent, delivering high-quality legal services to individuals and businesses. With a strong reputation for professionalism, integrity, and client care, we are seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our leadership team on a part-time basis. This strategic role will support the firm’s continued growth, profitability, and long-term sustainability.
Role Overview
As CFO, you will be responsible for leading the financial strategy of the practice, ensuring robust financial management, and providing clear commercial insight to support the Partners and senior leadership team. You will play a key role in strategic planning, risk management, and compliance with Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) financial rules.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver financial strategy aligned with the firm’s vision and objectives.
- Oversee all financial operations, including management accounts, cashflow, forecasting, and budgeting.
- Provide accurate, insightful financial reporting to the Partners, enabling sound decision-making.
- Ensure compliance with SRA Accounts Rules, tax, audit, and other statutory requirements.
- Lead on financial planning for investments, growth opportunities, and new practice areas.
- Develop financial KPIs and monitor performance, driving efficiency and profitability.
- Manage relationships with banks, auditors, insurers, and external advisors.
- Assess and manage financial risks, ensuring appropriate controls are in place.
- Mentor and support the finance function, building capability and resilience.
- Contribute to the broader leadership of the firm as a trusted adviser to the Partners.
Skills & Experience
- Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) with senior financial leadership experience.
- Proven track record as a CFO, Finance Director, or equivalent role in professional services; legal sector experience and knowledge of SRA Accounts Rules strongly preferred.
- Strong commercial acumen, able to balance compliance with growth and profitability.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, able to engage with Partners and non-finance colleagues.
- Strategic thinker who can also work hands-on in an SME/professional services environment.
- Experience of leading financial planning, risk management, and business transformation.
