Overview:

A London University Technical College (UTC) is seeking a dynamic and strategic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead its financial operations. The CFO will be a key member of the senior leadership team, providing both strategic and operational support to the Principal and Board of Governors. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the financial sustainability, compliance, and long-term growth of the UTC.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Financial Leadership:
    • Develop and implement the UTC’s financial strategy to support its educational mission and strategic objectives.
    • Provide financial analysis, forecasting, and guidance to the Principal and Board of Governors to inform key decision-making.
    • Drive the UTC’s financial planning, including budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial modelling.
    • Identify potential financial risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  2. Financial Management and Reporting:
    • Oversee the preparation of accurate and timely financial reports, including monthly management accounts, annual financial statements, and reports for the Board of Governors.
    • Lead the preparation of the annual budget in consultation with relevant stakeholders, ensuring alignment with the UTC’s strategic priorities.
    • Manage cash flow effectively to ensure financial stability, including monitoring reserves and investments.
    • Ensure compliance with financial regulations, reporting requirements, and best practices within the education sector, particularly those related to academies and UTCs.
  3. Compliance and Governance:
    • Ensure robust financial controls and procedures are in place to safeguard the UTC’s assets.
    • Lead on compliance with financial policies, external audits, and regulatory requirements (e.g., ESFA, DfE, and Charities Commission).
    • Serve as the key liaison with external auditors, providing all necessary documentation and support.
  4. Operational Efficiency and Resource Management:
    • Manage the finance team, providing leadership, development, and support to ensure high standards of financial management.
    • Oversee procurement processes to ensure value for money and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
    • Support operational projects, including capital investment and facilities management, from a financial perspective.
    • Collaborate with other departments to ensure the effective allocation and monitoring of resources across the UTC.
  5. Stakeholder Engagement and Communication:
    • Present financial information to the Board of Governors, committees, and senior leadership in a clear and accessible manner.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders, including banks, funders, and government bodies.
    • Provide expert financial advice to support funding applications and bids for additional resources.
Qualifications

Key Requirements:

  • Professional accounting qualification (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA) and significant post-qualification experience in a senior financial management role.
  • Experience in an educational setting, preferably within an academy, college, or university technical college, is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of the financial regulations governing educational institutions, particularly in the UK context.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic financial planning, budgeting, and risk management.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage a finance team, with excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to present complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
