CFOs — Fractional, Interim, Part-Time & Permanent
FD Capital is a specialist CFO and Finance Director recruitment agency. We place Chief Financial Officers across the UK on a fractional, part-time, interim or permanent basis — typically delivering shortlists within 3 to 7 working days.
The distinction between a Finance Director and a CFO is not always well-defined — in practice, the CFO title is more common in larger businesses, investor-backed companies, US-influenced organisations, and listed or pre-IPO businesses. FD Capital places across both titles. See our guide: When to Hire a Finance Director Instead of a CFO.
It’s not only FTSE 500 companies who are recruiting CFOs. Many of our financial executives, including our top CFOs, are available to work on a part-time or fractional basis. FD Capital provides access to industry-leading experts without the financial burden of a full-time C-suite position. A part-time CFO can unleash your company’s potential.
Types of CFO Engagement
Fractional CFO
A fractional CFO provides board-level financial leadership on a part-week basis — usually one to three days per week. This is the right solution for scale-ups, VC or PE-backed companies, and founder-led businesses that need strategic finance leadership without committing to a full-time hire.
Fractional CFOs typically own financial strategy, investor reporting, KPI frameworks, and board-level financial communication. The model is increasingly common at Series A and B stage businesses.

Part-Time CFO
A part-time CFO works a fixed, contracted number of days per week — usually one to three — on a permanent or long-term rolling contract. Part-time CFO arrangements are common in businesses with established finance teams that need senior oversight without a full-time executive.
Interim CFO
An interim CFO is appointed for a defined period — typically 3 to 18 months — to cover a vacancy, manage a specific project, or lead the finance function through a period of change. Common scenarios: covering a CFO vacancy; pre-IPO financial preparation; post-acquisition integration; financial restructuring.

Permanent CFO
Permanent CFO recruitment is typically for executive-level roles in businesses with revenues above £15–20m, investor-backed companies, and businesses preparing for exit or IPO. FD Capital runs executive search processes combining headhunting with our existing candidate network.

Portfolio CFO
A portfolio CFO holds simultaneous CFO positions across two to four businesses at once. This model is increasingly common in the start-up and scale-up ecosystem, where multiple businesses need CFO-level input but none can justify a full-time appointment.
Outsourced & Virtual CFO
An outsourced CFO provides CFO-level support — financial strategy, reporting, investor relations, treasury — as a managed service. A virtual CFO operates entirely remotely. Both models suit businesses that need board-level finance leadership without an on-site hire.

FD Capital focuses exclusively on CFO and Finance Director recruitment. We do not place accountants, financial controllers, or junior finance roles. Our entire operation is built around senior finance leadership — which means our CFO candidate network is deeper, our market knowledge is more current, and our process is faster than generalist headhunters.
