Across the past 16 months FD Capital has placed senior finance leaders across all three environments — approximately 14 family office CFO appointments, roughly 70 SME CFO appointments at sub-£75m businesses, and approximately 41 corporate CFO appointments at £75m+ businesses including PE-backed and listed environments. The role differences across these three contexts are observably substantial and affect candidate selection, compensation structure, work pattern, and career trajectory in specific ways. Family office CFOs typically operate as principal-facing trusted advisor with deep involvement across investment, governance, succession planning, and family financial matters — roles characterised by long tenure (typically 7-12 years), modest base compensation but substantial discretionary or carry arrangements, and substantial scope but constrained team. SME CFOs typically operate at the centre of growing finance functions building infrastructure for scale — characterised by 4-6 year tenure, market-rate compensation, broad scope and small team. Corporate CFOs typically operate within established finance functions with substantial team — characterised by 3-5 year tenure, premium compensation with structured bonus and equity components, focused scope and large team.
