Interim Group Financial Controller – SaaS / Fintech
Description

Location: London preferred (remote/hybrid). US-based candidates considered with substantial overlap with London working hours.
Assignment: Interim, immediate start through to January 2027
Commitment: Around 4 days per week for the first six weeks, tapering to 2–3 days per week
Day rate: Up to £800, dependent on experience
Reporting to: CEO

Role

FD Capital is appointing an Interim Group Financial Controller for an established international SaaS and financial technology business. The group is headquartered in the US, with operating subsidiaries in the UK and Asia-Pacific, around 80 employees, and Microsoft Dynamics as its ledger.

The previous Financial Controller has left, and the CEO needs a seasoned interim who can take ownership of the numbers straight away. The brief is to validate and remediate the financial records, rebuild a dependable month-end close, and give the leadership team forecasts it can make decisions on.

This is a genuine hands-on controllership assignment. It will suit an experienced interim Financial Controller or hands-on Finance Director who is comfortable working directly in the ledger and reconciliation files, not an advisory or oversight role. You will report to the CEO in London and work alongside a capable junior accountant, whose development forms part of your remit.

The assignment runs until January, taking the business through the Q4 close and into year-end. A permanent Financial Controller search is running in parallel, and your job is to hand that person a clean, controlled and fully documented finance function.

The assignment is milestone-driven. Early deliverables include a finance risk and remediation register, a reconciled cash position, a 13-week cash forecast and a prioritised workplan. By January, the business expects validated trial balances, corrected consolidated accounts, an integrated reforecast and next-year budget, two controlled month-end closes and a complete handover.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of the group's accounting records, assessing their accuracy and completeness and leading the remediation personally.
  • Validate opening balances and correct year-to-date results, keeping a documented adjustment log and clearly reporting any unresolved issues and their potential impact.
  • Establish reliable entity-level and consolidated trial balances across the US, UK and Asia-Pacific entities.
  • Complete or supervise full balance sheet reconciliations, including:
    • bank
    • receivables and payables
    • payroll
    • deferred and unbilled revenue
    • accruals and prepayments
    • fixed assets
    • indirect taxes
    • intercompany
    • equity
  • Design and embed a documented month-end close calendar, checklist and control framework, bringing the close to around business day 10.
  • Review SaaS revenue recognition across subscription, licence and services revenue, including deferred revenue schedules.
  • Document foreign currency, intercompany and consolidation treatment, and produce reliable consolidated P&L, balance sheet and cash flow statements.
  • Build an early 13-week cash forecast, followed by an integrated current-year reforecast and a monthly budget for next year, with base, downside and upside scenarios.
  • Prepare the finance function for year-end, acting as the main contact for external tax, statutory and audit advisers.
  • Introduce actual-to-forecast reporting and a concise monthly KPI pack covering the key SaaS metrics.
  • Coach and assess the junior accountant, and recommend which transactional work should be reassigned or outsourced.
  • Support the recruitment of the permanent Financial Controller and prepare a full handover package.
Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA, CA or equivalent).
  • Senior experience as a Group Financial Controller, Financial Controller or hands-on Finance Director, ideally including interim assignments.
  • SaaS experience, including subscription revenue recognition, deferred revenue and SaaS KPIs.
  • A proven track record of fixing unreliable financials or rebuilding a broken close.
  • Multi-entity, multi-currency consolidation experience.
  • Strong balance sheet reconciliation, controls and integrated three-statement forecasting skills.
  • Confident, candid communication with a CEO about risk, uncertainty and priorities.
  • Experience developing and reviewing junior finance staff.
  • Available to start immediately and commit through to January.

Desirable

  • US reporting experience, including US GAAP and reporting into a US parent.
  • Microsoft Dynamics experience.
  • UK and Australian subsidiary experience.
  • Businesses of around $10–50m revenue.
  • Audit remediation or finance transformation experience.
Job Benefits

  • Day rate of up to £800.
  • A clearly defined interim through to January, with direct CEO sponsorship and measurable milestones.
  • Front-loaded commitment that tapers to 2–3 days a week, leaving room for other work later in the assignment.
  • Remote or hybrid working, with London preferred.
  • Exposure to an international SaaS group spanning the US, UK and Asia-Pacific.
  • The chance to leave a lasting mark on the finance function ahead of a permanent appointment.
