Position title
Fractional Financial Controller Northern Ireland
Description

FD Capital is delighted to be working with a profitable and growing critical building systems integrator headquartered in Northern Ireland, with an active London delivery operation, to appoint a Fractional Financial Controller on a one-day-per-week basis.

Our client designs, installs, and commissions AV, lighting control (KNX/DALI), BMS, GRMS, structured cabling, and command-centre infrastructure for an enviable portfolio of flagship clients spanning landmark five-star hotels, heritage buildings, healthcare estates, and elite sports facilities across London, the North West, and Northern Ireland. The business is well established, profitable, and positioning itself for its next phase of growth.

The Engagement

  • Commitment: One day per week, ongoing, with an initial six-month term and a 90-day deliverables review.
  • Basis: Day-rate contract; IR35 status to be agreed based on working arrangements.
  • Location: Northern Ireland based candidates are strongly preferred. The role can be worked on a hybrid basis with regular time at the company’s Lisburn / Greater Belfast headquarters, combined with remote working against the company’s cloud systems.
  • Reporting: Directly to the Managing Director, working alongside the Engineering Manager, external accountants, and a retained CVR consultant.
Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities

  • WIP-to-invoice discipline: ensure all completed and certified work is billed promptly, owning the billing cadence across all live projects.
  • Variation control: convert verbal variation commitments into written instructions or escalate them to the MD for commercial resolution, maintaining a live variation register with exposure values.
  • Small works & servicing: ensure this revenue stream is fully invoice-managed.
  • Leak identification and closure: aged debt, retention recovery, under-recovered variations, supplier and subcontract cost creep, overhead drift, and unapplied rate uplifts — identified, quantified, and actioned.
  • Cash: build and maintain a rolling 13-week cash forecast, updated weekly and feeding the MD’s weekly summary report.
  • Margin visibility: project-level margin reporting (drawing on CVR output) with clear recommendations on where profit is being made, lost, and left on the table.
Qualifications

Candidate Profile

  • Qualified accountant (ACA / ACCA / CIMA) with hands-on Financial Controller experience inside a contracting business — M&E, fit-out, or specialist subcontractor backgrounds are strongly preferred.
  • Fluent in construction commercial mechanics: applications for payment, certification, retentions, variations, and JCT/NEC subcontract interfaces.
  • Systems-literate and self-sufficient: comfortable working against cloud accounting and project data, and improving process rather than just reporting on it.
  • Based in Northern Ireland, or within easy reach of Belfast and able to attend the office regularly.
  • Direct and honest in style — the client values straight dealing and will reciprocate it.
