Role
FD Capital is working with a well-established, family-owned construction business in Redditch with a turnover of around £5m. It plans to double that to £10m over the next four years. Its core work is property repair and reinstatement, and it is now taking on residential and commercial developments. That growth brings bigger up-front commitments, longer cash cycles and the need to structure and fund projects properly.
The business now needs an experienced fractional Finance Director / CFO with a construction background. You’ll take control of cash flow, advise the directors on structuring and funding the developments, and lead a small in-house finance team. You’ll report to the directors and work alongside the external accountants, who handle year-end.
The role starts at around one day a week. On-site time in Redditch is preferred, but strong remote-based candidates will be considered. It’s a long-term engagement that will grow with the development pipeline.
Responsibilities
Build and maintain a rolling cash flow forecast across contract work and development projects, and manage working capital.
Advise on special purpose vehicle (SPV) structures for each development, including group, tax and lending implications.
Source and negotiate development, project and working capital finance with banks and specialist lenders, and prepare financial models and lender packs.
Introduce project-level reporting covering costs to complete, margins, valuations, retentions and cash by job.
Set up monthly management accounts and a regular reporting rhythm for the directors.
Lead and upskill a three-person finance team, and strengthen processes and controls.
Work with the external accountants on year-end, tax and structuring.
Act as a commercial sounding board to the directors on pricing, growth and investment decisions.
Qualifications
Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) with Finance Director or CFO experience.
Background in construction, contracting or property development. Insurance repair or reinstatement experience is an advantage.
Proven track record of raising development and project finance and setting up SPVs.
Strong cash flow forecasting and working capital management in a project-based business.
Experience in family-owned or owner-managed SMEs, and in developing a small finance team.
Established fractional or interim practitioner, ideally within reach of Redditch, and available immediately.
