Description
Location: London (largely remote, regular face-to-face meetings)
Commitment: 2–3 days per month, more during the initial set-up
Day rate: £800–£1,100 per day
Start: ASAP, and by December 2026 at the latest
Role
FD Capital is working with a growing, owner-managed London consultancy that advises technology businesses. The firm is entering a new phase of organic expansion and expects to raise external investment to support it. It now needs an experienced fractional Finance Director to take senior ownership of its finance function and make sure its numbers stand up to investor scrutiny.
Day-to-day finance is handled by an outsourced Financial Controller, with a separate year-end accountant. This is an oversight role, not a team build. You will direct and review the outsourced function, set the standard for reporting and controls, and prepare the business for its first institutional raise. You will report directly to the founder. The role starts with extra time while things are set up, then settles at two to three days a month. It is a long-term engagement with scope to grow as the business grows.
Responsibilities
Oversee and direct the outsourced Financial Controller, and coordinate with the year-end accountant.
Set up timely, investor-grade monthly management accounts and board reporting.
Introduce project and client profitability reporting covering utilisation, WIP, project margins and revenue recognition.
Build the budget, rolling forecast and cash flow model to support growth decisions.
Review financial controls, processes and systems, and fix weaknesses ahead of due diligence.
Prepare the business for investment, including the financial model, data room, investor discussions and due diligence.
Act as a commercial sounding board to the founder on pricing, resourcing and growth decisions.
Qualifications
Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) with Finance Director or CFO experience.
Background in a consultancy, agency or other project-based professional services business.
Hands-on command of utilisation, WIP and project margin reporting.
Track record of helping an owner-managed services business through its first institutional investment round.
Experience directing outsourced finance providers.
Technology or telecoms sector exposure is an advantage.
Established fractional practitioner, based in or able to travel to London, and available to start promptly.
