Part-Time FP&A Recruitment
FD Capital places part-time FP&A professionals for UK businesses — experienced financial planning and analysis specialists employed on reduced-hours contracts, typically two to four days per week, with full employment rights and benefits. The part-time FP&A professional is employed by a single business, available exclusively on their contracted days, and builds the continuity of understanding and institutional knowledge that distinguishes the employed model from the fractional or interim alternatives. Adrian Lawrence FCA, founder of FD Capital and a Fellow of the ICAEW, leads our senior finance recruitment practice.

The part-time employed model is the right choice for businesses whose FP&A requirement is consistent and recurring rather than project-based. If the business needs someone to run the budget process every year, maintain the rolling forecast every month, be present at the weekly management meeting on their contracted days, and build relationships with department heads over time — the employment contract provides that continuity and commitment in a way the fractional day-rate model cannot. If the FP&A requirement is more output-focused or irregular, see our Fractional FP&A page.
Part-Time FP&A vs Fractional FP&A
The distinction between part-time and fractional is the same one that applies across all FD Capital’s flexible finance engagement types. A part-time FP&A professional is an employee — working two to four contracted days per week for a single employer, on salary, with holiday entitlement, notice period and the full suite of employment rights. They are exclusively available to that business on their contracted days.
A fractional FP&A professional works across multiple businesses simultaneously on a day-rate basis. They bring broader cross-sector experience and commercial independence but divide their time between clients. IR35 does not apply to employed part-time arrangements — the individual is on PAYE in the normal way — which simplifies the engagement considerably compared to fractional day-rate arrangements where IR35 status needs to be assessed. See HMRC’s IR35 guidance for detail on the distinction.
The practical question is whether the business values exclusive availability and employment continuity (part-time) or broader market perspective and day-rate flexibility (fractional). Both deliver qualified FP&A capability — the structural difference determines which fits the business’s working model and the FP&A professional’s relationship with the wider team.
What a Part-Time FP&A Professional Does
Budget and forecast ownership
The part-time FP&A professional owns the planning cycle on their contracted days — running the annual budget process, maintaining the rolling forecast, updating the financial model with actuals and refreshing forward assumptions with the management team. The employed model is particularly well-suited to businesses where the budget process requires genuine internal stakeholder management — getting departmental input, challenging revenue assumptions, building the cost base with the heads of function — because the part-time employee attends those conversations as a member of the team rather than as an external consultant arriving for an allocated day.
Management reporting and variance analysis
The part-time FP&A professional produces the variance analysis and forward outlook that supports the monthly management accounts pack — explaining what drove the month relative to budget and forecast, updating the full-year view, and providing the forward-looking commentary that turns reporting into decision support. Working alongside the management accountant or financial controller, the part-time FP&A professional provides the analytical layer that elevates the finance function’s output from historical reporting to commercial insight.
Commercial finance partnership
In businesses where the FP&A role involves partnering with commercial functions — working with sales on pipeline-to-revenue conversion, with marketing on spend efficiency, with operations on cost management — the part-time employed model provides the relationship continuity that makes that partnership effective. A commercial finance partner who attends the same weekly meeting every week, understands the recurring challenges of each department and builds genuine relationships with functional leads is qualitatively different from a fractional professional who arrives for two days, produces an analysis and leaves.
Investor and board reporting
For PE-backed businesses or those with external investors, the part-time FP&A professional prepares the financial sections of the investor and board reporting pack — ensuring the KPI dashboard is consistent, the financial narrative is accurate and the forward outlook is clearly presented. Being an employee rather than an external professional means they can attend board meetings as a member of the finance team, present analysis directly and respond to questions with the depth of understanding that comes from being genuinely embedded in the business.
